Those who have competed against Dirk Nowitzki have grown aware of his commanding presence on the basketball court. As the ninth overall pick in the 1998 NBA draft, Nowitzki has grown to become a profound leader on the Dallas Mavericks. At seven feet tall, Nowitzki can perform in the post and around the perimeter, making his basketball skills extremely valuable. When one thinks of Dirk’s tremendous ability, it is hard to ignore the fact that he is the first European basketball player to win a Most Valuable Player award. After joining the Dallas Mavericks, Dirk’s teammates were able to exploit his skills. It was apparent that he was most effective in the post, and Nowitzki’s teammates began feeding him down low. Nowitzki began playing for the Dallas Mavericks during the team’s major transition period when Mark Cuban became owner. Nowitzki credits most of his success to Cuban’s concern for his players. During the 2000-2001 basketball season, Dirk managed to put up numbers comparable to some of basketball’s greatest players, scoring over twenty points per game and grabbing just under ten rebounds per game. The Mavericks soon learned of Dirk’s astounding capabilities. However, many did not take into consideration his durability. Dirk has played in at least seventy-five games in all but one of his years, which was his rookie season when he appeared in forty-seven. Evidently, Dirk Nowitzki’s reputation in the National Basketball Association has grown considerably since he entered the league.
